Hello Trippers, Cosmic Jim here with an update on the new promo spot for the Psychedelic Renaissance show. With the major help of Sean (Something,Something,Something) we crafted a new promo spot for the show which is designed to showcase what the Psychedelic Renaissance is all about: ie rare 60's & 70's psych, garage and acid-folk records. Since the promo spot is less than a minute long, I felt it proper and respectful to give full credit to the musicians who were responsible for the background music, in the hope that people who hear the background music (and like it) will be able to wrap their minds around what it is. What is it? It's a rare xian rock band from Sandpoint, Idaho circa 1969 called: THE LAST CALL OF SHILOH. They were part of a huge revival movement that swept the country in the late 1960' & early 1970's which advocated a return to the original teachings of Christ and which was termed "Jesus Freaks" basically they were christian hippies ("Shiloh" they say on the lp jacket is another name for Jesus.) Most (but not all) of the Jesus-freaks smoked weed since it was the "holy herb" spoken of in the bible. In a way they were like the Rastafarians in that the herb was part of the holy sacrament. Anyway, the LAST CALL OF SHILOH made an lp on their own "Last Call" label and the instrumental ending/finale of the song "Message of the Gospel" is the music used in the promo spot. The astute listener will notice that the melody is quite similar to the song "Let's Take a Trip Down Whittier Blvd'" by seminal East L.A. Chicano garage rockers THEE MIDNIGHTERS, which was released as a 45 on the Chattahoochie label circa 1966. "Whittier Blvd" is an acknowledged low- rider classic, and how the Jesus freaks up in Idaho got a copy of it is a mystery, but then the whole premise of the Psychedelic Renaissance show is to play "mystery records."and not just xian mystery records. If you want more information on the LAST CALL OF SHILOH, I'd recommend Ken Scott's Archivist books, or visit the Lama on the acidarchives.com. The record was originally released in an edition of either 300 or 500 copies, and I don't think it's been reissued yet. (Hopefully interest in the lp will cause it to be manifested into 2007-2008 cd format. The whole of side 2 of the record is fantastic west coast psych, albeit with a Christian edge - which may turn off the pagans amongst us, or maybe not, since the music is of such stellar quality that one may think they are listening to some unreleased QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE or maybe even some JEFFERSON AIRPLANE. (and the song "New Jerusalem" "borrows" the intro to the BEATLES "Dear Prudence" off their "White Album." The last song on the lp "Brokeness" is far and away the most etherial dual female vocal christian acid-folk song on the planet, complete with shimmering reverb slide guitar in a way that takes your breath away. In fact, side 2 of this album is in 10 ten of all west coast psych masterpieces of all time. To my ears, if side 1 matched the intensity of side 2, this lp would rank right up there with the MUSIC EMPORIUM, or J.A's "Surrealistic Pillow" of any other west coast psych album we could name. Curiously, later the band moves to New Jersey? and turns into the LIVING SACRIFICE band, but I have yet to hear their music under that name. This is a holy psych record trippers, if you hear it, I'm sure you'll agree. Peace out Trippers, from Cosmic Jim
